Transcript:
Power by Kenzo is a very surprising masculine fragrance. The surprise is in the name “Power”, because this woody, ambery floral is wonderfully subtle.

Power speaks softly and carries a big stick. In this case, the big stick is the wearer’s confidence, since he’s secure enough to know that he doesn’t need to singe people’s nose hairs with his cologne to make a statement.

Created by prize-winning perfumer Olivier Polge, this eau de toilette opens with bergamot and cardamom. It’s fresh and ever-so-mildly spicy. Then, you get a wisp of florals, including jasmine, but they’re more of a background to the cedar wood and the rich, slightly powdery resins.

I can pick up on the tolu balsam, which smells a bit like cloves and vanilla. My best friend labdanum is in there, too, which is my idea of “unicorn underbelly fluff” – magical animal tummy smell.

Guys who like Gendarme for an all-purpose “no-scent” scent should check out Power. I find that Gendarme veers into soapy-sweet muskiness, but Power stays higher and dryer.

With its woody florals, Power is a more masculine version of Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely – which a lot of men enjoy wearing, by the way. Equally, woman who love transparent orientals should give Power a whirl.

Power is appropriate for work: the office, meetings, cattle rustling – whatever your work is. But Power would also be really nice in more intimate situations. It’s a “come closer” scent, without being desperate. I’m Katie Puckrik, and I smell.

Hi katie I have a … Hi katie I have a question Im 20 yrs old and i have a sensitive nose and i cant take strong scents i tend to go for floral and sweet scents but i havent found a good one yet do u have any recommendations thats good for a 20 yr old thanks

  • melikeyyeah:

Labdanum: Not to be … Labdanum: Not to be confused with laudanum.

  • boorad0859:

Katie, what an … Katie, what an interesting list of women's fragrances for guys to try…I am all kinds of curious about Jasmine Noir now.

I'd also recommend Black Cashmere & Midnight Poison as one for guys to explore.

  • brianbarrtt:

Hahaha! I wonder … Hahaha! I wonder what particular tastes those may be! =) I smelled No. 5 Eau Premiere and it's lovely! And it's still recognizably No. 5. What are your thoughts on Estee Lauder's Intuition for Men? It seems like an interesting Oriental for men, though I wonder if it's any good. Sorry Katie, I'm in "Let's-Explore-Estee-Lauder" mode. =)

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

Yes, I remember! Yes, I remember!

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

Yes, you'd have to … Yes, you'd have to have very particular tastes to carry off White Linen. The powderiness might put me off. But Luca T advocates Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere for the lads, and I think that could be successfully executed.

I must have missed … I must have missed this review! thanks so much katie! I wanted yout o review this for a while lol

  • brianbarrtt:

Another wonderful … Another wonderful review Katie! Your Unicorn cameo made me laugh! Speaking about women's fragrances for guys, I read in Luca Turin & Tania Sanchez's book "Perfume: The A-Z Guide" that Estee Lauder White Linen is a fragrance that 'Guys and gals could both wear'. I've smelled it and it's a very comforting, soapy floral. I just don't know if I can pull it off though. I might smell like a bar of high-quality soap. But then again, I'm beginning to find that appealing. Thanks Katie!

Women's fragrances … Women's fragrances for guys to try:
    Bulgari Jasmine Noir
Estée Lauder Youth Dew Amber Nude
    Gres Cabaret
    Lolita Lempicka
    Hermès Eau des Merveilles
    Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess
    YSL Elle
Gucci by Gucci for Women EdP
    Stella McCartney Stella
    Christian Dior Diorella
    Prada Infusion d'Iris

And then in the niche category, pretty much anything goes, with both sexes trying everything, but these two are especial faves of my Perfume Pen Pal Dan from my blog:
    Chanel Coromandel
    By Kilian Liaisons Dangereuse

on a side note, … on a side note, what are some other "women's" fragrances that would smell good on a guy? i'd like to explore some more possibilities. just some off the top of your head would be great :D

  • missduck9:

This is really … This is really interesting. Maybe I do something similar, but not all of the time…I am going to see if I can practice having a conscious nose. Thanks, Katie!

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

    Aw, thanks! Aw, thanks!

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

Thanks for the info … Thanks for the info on Power's side products.

I've not smelled John Galliano's fragrance. Good to have the insight on how it compares to Power.

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

    You're welcome, … You're welcome, Elizabeth!

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

Well, it's marketed … Well, it's marketed to men, but I don't see why women couldn't wear it, too. It's soft with subtle florals, and can "swing both ways".

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

    Haha! Haha!

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

    Correct! Correct!

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

    Thanks! Thanks!

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

The bottle is so … The bottle is so stylish and "holdable". The bottle designer based it on his design for a sake bottle.

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

Oooh…I adore Dior … Oooh…I adore Dior Homme! But Homme doesn't have Power's musky quality.

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

    Lucky man-friend! Lucky man-friend!

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

Flower Oriental is … Flower Oriental is lovely. And I'm loving Winter Flower and Flower Escentual, too. Oh – and Amour!

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

Lots of focus and … Lots of focus and experience & repetition. I make sure my nose is always "on" – & not just when I'm smelling fragrances. Food smells, nature smells, good smells, bad smells – I pay attention to them all, & mentally catalogue them. I call it having a "conscious nose". Smelling single note aromatherapy oils at health food is a great way to identify more obscure scents like myrrh or juniper, for instance. & lots of ordinary kitchen spices pop up in perfume: cinnamon, cumin, cardamom, pepper, etc.

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

Ah, yes – Power … Ah, yes – Power would make a nice antidote to Black Orchid.

  • KatiePuckrikSmells:

    Funny you should …
Funny you should say that, because once I interviewed Alanis M, and she told me that I really reminded her of her friend Tori Amos! “Isn’t it ironic?”
